The Dr. Irving Schneider Collection, Part 3

Among the fine selection of some 330 Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, Norman and later English coins offered in Part 3 of the Dr. Irving Schneider Collection, familiar types in choice grade sit alongside seldom-encountered rarities. Dr. Schneider’s ambition was to collect as many distinct Pennies, Groats and Shillings as possible. Given the scarcity of so many of the coins in this series, such a project could only ever be undertaken over several decades. Dr. Schneider began collecting English coins in the early 1960s, and some sixty years later, was still trying to acquire types he had never seen in the open market. This third sale further reveals Dr. Schneider’s success in the pursuit of his ambitious goal and confirms his place among the ranks of the great connoisseurs of the British series; collectors from whose celebrated cabinets so many of the coins presented here hail.

The Traveller Collection – III, British Coins, Part 2

The remarkable depth and quality of the Traveller Collection is abundantly evident in this second offering of British coins which features primarily milled silver coins with a particular emphasis on the largest denomination, the crown. In addition to a superb run of currency types, there is an outstanding selection of highly important pattern pieces and beautiful proof strikings including masterpieces by the likes of Simon, Roettiers, Pistrucci and Wyon. The coins are uniformly of considerable eye appeal; many are in matchless condition and, unsurprisingly, are the highest ever graded. A significant number of the coins in this sale are types which have not appeared at auction for decades, and several make their first appearance in over a century.

About David

David had a love of history and ancient objects from a young age. At primary school in Scotland, he got an early taste for dealing, trading choice conkers for sweets in the playground. Graduating with a degree in history from Cambridge University, in 2004 he successfully applied for an internship at Spink & Son in London. The experience of handling historical coins as well as encountering the vast literature on the subject was a revelation. So too was meeting the wonderful cast of characters who inhabit the world of numismatics. At Spink, David cut his teeth buying and selling coins on the front counter and cataloguing material for the Numismatic Circular and for auction. In 2010 he was recruited by Classical Numismatic Group to work as a specialist in the firm’s London office with the mandate to grow the firm’s business in British coins and represent clients in European auctions. Already possessing an eye for quality and the exceptional, at CNG David gained a deep understanding of the importance of detailed analysis in establishing a coin’s authenticity, rarity and state of preservation as well as the value of thorough cataloguing. During this time David gained extensive experience in handling Ancient and World coins and a firm grasp of the mechanics of the international coin trade.

Throughout his 20 year career David has been instrumental in the sale of numerous high value coins and important collections including the record-breaking auction of the Geoffrey Cope collection of British coins in 2024. Working closely with private collectors worldwide, David also regularly consults to a number of museums and institutions including the Royal Collection of His Majesty Charles III. David is a council member of the British Numismatic Trade Association and a trustee of the British Numismatic Trust.

David founded David Guest Numismatics in 2025 to offer clients the opportunity to buy and sell choice and rare British and World coins by auction or private treaty. An established relationship with leading numismatic auction house Numismatica Ars Classica NAC AG provides the ideal platform to maximise the value of any consignment.

The collecting of Coins and Medals is known to be a noble Amusement; the Delight of the Curious, a good Ornament to History, as well as a necessary Appendage to Books of that kind. Many Nations in former Ages, as well as the present, have Experience in this Subject; and it is allowed and encouraged in all polite Nations. From whence is seen and known the great Honour, Pleasure, and Usefulness of such Studies; for which no Argument need be advanced, where the Fact is past Dispute.
